What makes a good July city

A good July city has three things: daytime highs that rarely punish walking, enough long evenings to make up for the heat of the day, and a tourist load that stays human. Northern Europe, the Atlantic coast and mountain-rimmed cities usually meet all three.

The flip side is rain: the cooler places are often the wetter ones. Pack a light waterproof and plan one indoor option per day, and the occasional shower will not cost you much.

Central and Eastern Europe

1. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia’s capital is compact, green and almost car-free in the centre. July evenings along the Ljubljanica river are lively, and Lake Bled and the Julian Alps are about an hour away for cooler days. Expect warm afternoons, sometimes near 30 °C, and occasional thunderstorms.

2. Gdańsk, Poland

Gdańsk combines a rebuilt Hanseatic old town with Baltic beaches a tram ride away. The long-running St Dominic’s Fair usually starts in late July and fills the streets with stalls. Summer highs are usually comfortable, in the low 20s °C.

3. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn’s walled old town is one of the best preserved in Europe, and July days are long, with light until late evening. Cruise-ship days can crowd the centre at midday, so explore early or late and spend the busy hours in Kalamaja or Telliskivi.

4. Riga, Latvia

Riga has the largest collection of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe, a huge central market in former zeppelin hangars and the beach resort of Jūrmala half an hour away. July is warm and bright, and many café terraces stay open late.

5. Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius has a large baroque old town, the bohemian Užupis district and a relaxed pace even in peak summer. July highs are usually in the low 20s °C. Day trips to Trakai Castle, on its lake island, make an easy half day.

Northern Europe and the Atlantic

6. Bergen, Norway

Bergen is the gateway to the western fjords, with a colourful wharf, a funicular to Mount Fløyen and fjord cruises from the harbour. It is one of Europe’s wettest cities, even in July, so bring a waterproof and treat a dry day as a bonus.

7. Aarhus, Denmark

Denmark’s second city has the ARoS art museum with its rainbow walkway, a car-free Latin Quarter and beaches and forest within cycling distance. July is pleasantly mild, and the city feels far less crowded than Copenhagen.

8. Galway, Ireland

Galway is small, musical and close to Connemara and the Aran Islands. The Galway International Arts Festival is usually in July, and the Galway Races usually run in late July into early August, when rooms book out. Weather is mild and changeable.

9. Inverness, Scotland

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and a practical base for Loch Ness, Culloden and the road west to Skye. July brings very long days and mild temperatures. Midges can be a nuisance near water in the evenings, so pack repellent.

10. Akureyri, Iceland

Akureyri is Iceland’s northern capital, a small town on a long fjord with whale-watching boats, botanical gardens and Lake Mývatn about an hour away. July is the warmest and busiest month in the north, so book rooms and cars early.

Western Europe

11. Santander, Spain

Santander is a city with beaches: the Sardinero sands, the Magdalena peninsula and a modern art centre on the bay. Northern Spain stays mild in July while the south bakes. Santander’s summer festival season usually runs through July and August.

12. Oviedo, Spain

Asturias’ capital is elegant, walkable and famous for cider houses. It sits between the Picos de Europa and the coast, so mountains and beaches are both within an hour. July is green and mild, with the occasional grey morning.

13. Nantes, France

Nantes turns its old shipyards into a giant play space, with mechanical elephants at Les Machines de l’île. The summer art trail, Le Voyage à Nantes, usually runs from early July into September. The Atlantic beaches are under an hour away.

14. Annecy, France

Annecy sits on one of Europe’s cleanest lakes, with canals through the old town and mountains on every side. July is warm and lively, with swimming beaches and cycle paths around the lake. It does get busy on weekends; go midweek if you can.

15. Trieste, Italy

Trieste feels more Habsburg than Italian, with grand cafés, a huge sea-facing square and swimming spots along the coast road. It can be hot in July, but sea breezes help. Use the coastal path to Miramare Castle for an easy morning walk.

North America

16. Quebec City, Canada

Quebec City’s walled old town is the most European-feeling city in North America. The Festival d’été de Québec, a big outdoor music festival, usually takes place in July, so book early if you want to go then, or avoid those days if you want quiet.

17. Halifax, Canada

Halifax has a long harbour boardwalk, seafood shacks and easy day trips to Peggy’s Cove and the Lunenburg waterfront. July is warm but rarely hot, and sea fog can roll in on some mornings before clearing.

18. Victoria, Canada

Victoria, on Vancouver Island, is one of the driest and sunniest corners of Canada’s west coast in summer. Whale-watching boats leave from the harbour, and the gardens are at their best. It is a short ferry or seaplane hop from Vancouver.

Asia and South America

19. Sapporo, Japan

While most of Japan is hot and humid in July, Sapporo is usually cooler and less rainy. Beer gardens open in Odori Park, and the lavender fields of Furano usually peak in July. Trains make Otaru and the national parks easy.

20. Arequipa, Peru

Arequipa, the white city of volcanic stone, is in the middle of its dry season in July, with clear skies and cool nights. It is the gateway to the Colca Canyon, where condors fly in the mornings. Peru’s national holidays in late July make domestic travel busier.

How to plan a July city break

  • Book rooms first. In July, central hotels go before flights do. Our guide on what to book first when planning a trip sets out the order.
  • Check festival dates. Many events here move each year; they are usually in the month shown, but check the official site for this edition’s dates.
  • Walk early and late. Midday is for museums, markets and long lunches.
  • Pack for both. A light waterproof and sun protection belong in the same bag in northern cities.
