July is peak summer in the north and mid-winter in the south, which makes it one of the most uneven months for travel. The best places to travel in July are the ones where the season is working for you: dry savannahs, cool mountains, northern coasts and the drier side of each monsoon.

This guide groups fifteen destinations by region, with the reason each one works in July and the catch to plan around. It ends with the places where July usually goes wrong, so you can rule them out early.

How July divides the world
Three patterns shape July. The Northern Hemisphere is in full summer and school holidays, so demand and prices peak in Europe, North America and parts of Asia. Southern Africa, South America and Australia are in their dry or cool season, which suits safaris and the tropical north of Australia.

Meanwhile the Asian monsoon is in full force on many western coasts, and the Atlantic hurricane season is under way, with the main risk usually later, from August to October. Choosing well in July is mostly about picking the right side of each of these patterns.

Europe
1. Iceland
July brings open highland roads, the calmest weather of the year and almost endless daylight in the first half of the month. Waterfalls, glacier walks and puffin colonies are all accessible. The catch is price: it is Iceland’s busiest and most expensive month, so book cars and rooms early.
Choosing a month is the decision that shapes the whole trip. The Smart Timing Bundle walks you through it: rule out the wrong months, find the shoulder window, book in the right order and pack for the weather you will actually get.
See the Smart Timing Bundle →2. The north coast of Spain
Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country stay mild while inland Spain overheats. Highs are usually in the low to mid-20s °C, with green hills, wide beaches and excellent food. Expect some cloud and the odd shower.
3. The Alps and the Dolomites
Mountain regions in Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria are at their best in July: lifts and huts are open, wildflowers are out and the valleys are green. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so walk in the morning.

4. Brittany and Normandy, France
France is on holiday in July, and the north-west coast offers a cooler alternative to the Mediterranean. Long tidal beaches, island day trips and summer festivals fill the month. Book coastal rooms early.
Asia and the Pacific
5. Bali, Indonesia
July is Bali’s peak dry season, with reliable sun and calm water on many beaches. It is also one of the busiest times of the year, so book villas early and stay near the areas you want to explore to avoid traffic.
6. Ko Samui and the Gulf islands, Thailand
Thailand’s rainy season is under way, but the Gulf of Thailand usually stays drier in July than the Andaman coast. Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao often have long dry spells and calm water, making them one of the country’s best July choices.
7. Hokkaido, Japan
Most of Japan is hot and humid in July, with the rainy season ending in the middle of the month across much of Honshu. Hokkaido is usually cooler and drier, with lavender fields around Furano and open national park trails.
8. Northern Australia and the Great Barrier Reef
July is the heart of the dry season in Australia’s tropical north. The Kimberley, Kakadu and the Red Centre are warm by day and cool at night, and the Reef has clear water and low humidity. Southern cities are cool and quiet, which suits a city break with fewer crowds.
Africa
9. Northern Tanzania
The dry season brings short grass, easy wildlife viewing and the great migration usually moving into the northern Serengeti, where river crossings often start from July. Lodges fill early. Zanzibar’s beaches are dry and breezy at the same time.
10. South Africa’s safari parks
Kruger and the private reserves are in the dry winter season: bush is thin, animals gather at water and mornings are cold. South African school holidays usually fall in late June and July, so book family lodges ahead. The Cape is in its wet winter.
11. Morocco’s coast and mountains
July is too hot for the desert and the imperial cities, but the Atlantic coast and the High Atlas can work. Essaouira stays mild thanks to its trade winds, and mountain villages above Marrakech are cooler than the plains below.
The Americas
12. Canada
July is Canada’s full summer: every road, lake and ferry is open, from the Rockies to the Maritimes. Warm days and long evenings suit road trips, paddling and city festivals. The trade-off is high demand in the national parks.

13. Peru
July is the dry season in the Andes, with clear skies over Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Nights are cold, and it is also Peru’s busiest month, helped by national holidays in late July. Book Machu Picchu entry and the Inca Trail well ahead.
14. Brazil’s Pantanal and Lençóis Maranhenses
July is the start of the dry season in the Pantanal, when wildlife gathers along shrinking waterways and jaguar sightings become more frequent. Further north, the dune lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses are usually full in July, after the rains.
15. Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s rainy season often pauses in July, a drier spell known as the little summer (veranillo). Mornings are frequently clear, rates are lower than in the dry season, and the first humpback whales arrive off the southern Pacific coast.

Where July usually goes wrong
- Inland Morocco, Egypt and the Gulf: heat regularly makes long days outdoors unsafe.
- Thailand’s Andaman coast and India’s west coast: monsoon seas and frequent rain.
- Vietnam’s north and south: hot and wet; the central coast is the better choice.
- Southern Japan and Tokyo: hot and humid, with typhoon risk rising later in summer.
- The Aegean islands on windy weeks: the meltemi can disrupt ferries; plan buffer days.
