Right place.
Right month.

Most travel sites tell you where to go. We tell you when — and when not to. Weather windows, crowd reality, price swings and the trade-offs nobody puts in the brochure, scored month by month across 50 countries.

How we decide

Every month gets scored on four things. Not on vibes.

"Best time to visit" is the most repeated and least useful sentence in travel writing. So we broke it apart. Each destination-month in our library is rated against four independent factors — and we publish the low scores as loudly as the high ones.

01

Weather reality

Not the average. The rain-day count, the humidity, the hours of usable daylight, and how often the month disappoints.

02

Crowd pressure

School holidays, national holidays, cruise-ship calendars and the specific weeks a city becomes unpleasant.

03

Cost curve

What flights and rooms actually swing across the year, and the exact fortnight where the price drops off a cliff.

04

What's actually open

Seasonal closures, ferry timetables, trails under snow, festivals worth arriving for — and ones worth avoiding.

Our editorial pledge: we tell you when not to go. If a destination is wrong for the month you're asking about, the guide says so in the first paragraph — even when a hotel booking would have earned us a commission.

Now book it

You know the month. Here's the price.

Search live fares and rooms without leaving the page. We don't rank results — the comparison engines do that, and we show you what they return.

Flight search Live fares · all airlines
Hotel search
This week's fare drops

Before you search: the fare you see depends far more on the month than the day you book. Check the destination's timing page first — moving a trip by three weeks routinely saves more than any booking trick. Estimate the full cost →

Search results are supplied by third-party comparison partners. Some bookings made through them earn us a commission at no extra cost to you — it never affects which month or destination we recommend.

What that trip actually costs.

Every budget calculator online multiplies your hotel by the number of people. That single error is why most trip budgets come in 30–40% under. Ours doesn't make it — lodging is costed per room, the way you'll actually pay for it.

  • Per-room lodging maths — the mistake almost every other tool makes
  • Season-aware pricing — the same week costs differently in April and August
  • The line items people forget — visas, transfers, baggage, tips, the last-day taxi

From readers who bought

We publish the criticism too.

Our review policy: verified purchasers only, quoted unedited except for length. We don't offer discounts, free copies or anything else in exchange for a review.

"We had Kyoto booked for the first week of April. The Japan book made the case for late November instead — same budget, half the crowds, and we watched the maples turn from an empty temple garden. That one chapter paid for the whole library."

"I've been to Morocco three times and still learned that March and October are not interchangeable. The scoring grid is the part I keep going back to."

"Moved our Greece trip from July to the second week of September on the strength of one page. Sea was warmer. Flights were $340 cheaper each."

"Useful, but thinner than I expected on South America — Bolivia and Paraguay get a paragraph each while Japan gets four pages. If you're planning that region, this isn't the book for you yet."

Our reply: fair, and correct. The South America chapters are being expanded for the next edition — Tomás gets it free, as does everyone who already bought.

How we know what we know

No logo wall. Just the sources we actually read.

Plenty of travel sites open with a row of media badges. We'd rather show you where the numbers in our guides come from — because that's the part you can check.

Meet the team
Before you ask

The questions we get most.

What does "month by month" actually mean here?

It means we don't publish a single "best time to visit" verdict per destination. Every place gets assessed across all twelve months — because the right answer changes depending on whether you care most about weather, price, crowds or what's open. A country can be excellent in April for one traveller and a mistake in April for another.

Who writes the guides?

A team of 22 contributing writers, each credited by name on their own articles with a linked author page. Every guide is checked against current source data before it publishes and re-checked on a rolling schedule. You can read more on our About page.

Is the site free? Where do the books fit in?

Every guide on the site is free and always will be. The books exist for people who want the whole picture in one place — all fifty countries scored side by side, offline, without clicking through fifty pages. Nothing in the books is hidden from the site out of spite; the site simply can't be read on a plane.

How do you make money, and does it change what you write?

Three ways: advertising, affiliate commissions on some booking and gear links, and our own books. Nobody pays for a mention, a placement or a favourable verdict. When a destination is a bad idea in the month you're asking about, the guide says so — including when a booking link on that page would have earned us something.

What format are the books, and can I get a refund?

PDF, delivered instantly after checkout, readable on phone, tablet, laptop or printed. No app, no account, no expiry. Refund terms are set out in our Terms of Service — if a book isn't what you expected, write to us.

Can I use your guides to plan a trip commercially?

Personal use, always. For redistribution, teaching, agency use or anything at scale, get in touch first — we license, we just need to know about it. Details are in the Terms of Service.

Still deciding where to go?

Start with the month you can actually take off work. It narrows the world faster than any destination list ever will.
