✈️ February travel

Ten places where February is the best month of the year, not a compromise.

Real temperatures, how the carnival dates move, and a five-step way to pick the one that fits your trip.

February is short, cold across most of the northern hemisphere, and oddly hard to plan for. Half the world is in deep winter, the other half is at the peak of summer, and three of the planet’s biggest parties land on dates that shift every year. This guide to the best travel destinations in February sorts all of that out: ten places where the month genuinely works in your favour, what the weather is really like, and how to choose between them without second-guessing.

The short answer: for warm weather in February, go to Maui, Cape Town, the Maldives or Sydney, where it’s summer or dry season. For festivals, Venice, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans usually hold carnival in February (sometimes early March, because the dates follow Easter). For crisp winter travel, Kyoto, Quebec City and Finnish Lapland are at their best, with plum blossoms, snow festivals and long, dark aurora nights.

✅ Key takeaways

  • ✓Decide first between sun, festival or snow; each of the ten destinations below is strong in only one of those.
  • ✓Check the carnival calendar before you book flights: Venice, Rio and New Orleans all follow Easter, so their dates move by up to five weeks.
  • ✓The Maldives has its driest month of the year in February, which is exactly why resorts fill up; book early.
  • ✓Humpback whale season off Maui typically peaks between January and March, so February is a near-certain bet.
  • ✓For northern lights, plan at least three nights in Lapland and stay up between about 9 pm and 1 am.

The 10 Best Travel Destinations in February, Sorted by What You Actually Want

The fastest way to pick a February trip is to start with the type of trip, not the place. Most “where to go” lists mix beaches, carnivals and ski towns together, which is how people end up packing a swimsuit for Quebec. Here’s the whole list on one screen, with the average daytime high and low for February so you can see what you’re signing up for.

4 Warm February Escapes Where Summer Is Actually Happening

If you want real heat in February, you need the southern hemisphere or the tropics, and these four deliver it reliably. They’re not interchangeable, though. One is about whales, one about wind and wine country, one about water so calm it looks fake, and one is a city that happens to have great beaches.

1. Maui: The Whale Month

Humpback whales spend the winter in Hawaiian waters, typically from November to April, and NOAA has described the season as peaking between January and March. February sits right in the middle of that peak, which is why Maui is the island to choose this month. You can often spot spouts from shore, but a boat trip gets you the breaches and tail slaps. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary asks everyone to stay at least 100 yards from the whales, and reputable operators follow that rule.

Weather-wise, Kahului averages about 28°C (82°F) by day and 18°C (64°F) at night, with roughly nine days of rain in the month. Most of those showers are short. Plan beach days on the drier leeward coast and keep the rainforest drive for a day when you don’t mind getting damp. For more wildlife ideas in the same month, see our guide to the best places for wildlife viewing in February.

2. Cape Town: Dry Heat and the Cape Doctor

February is high summer in Cape Town, and it’s about as dry as the city gets: around 10 mm of rain across the whole month, falling on two days on average. Daytime highs hover near 27°C (81°F) and nights drop to a comfortable 16–17°C (about 62°F). That’s ideal for Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula drive and long lunches in the winelands.

The catch is the wind. A strong south-easter, locally called the Cape Doctor, blows through spring and summer and can close the cableway or turn a beach afternoon into a sandblasting. The fix is simple: keep a flexible day in your plan and use the first calm, clear morning for the mountain.

3. The Maldives: The Driest Month of the Year

The Maldives’ dry north-east monsoon runs from about December to March, and February is the driest month of all: around 38 mm of rain over roughly three days, with about 260 hours of sunshine. Highs sit near 31°C (88°F) and nights rarely fall below 26°C (79°F). Sea conditions are usually calm, which is good news for snorkelling and for seaplane transfers.

Everyone else knows this too. Resorts are close to full from February through April, so this is the one destination on the list where booking late really hurts. If you prefer to see several islands rather than stay put, a liveaboard is worth a look; our roundup of February cruises and sailing trips covers the idea in more depth.

4. Sydney: Beach Summer With a Humid Edge

Sydney in February averages about 27°C (80°F) by day and 20°C (68°F) at night, and the ocean is warm enough for long swims at Bondi, Manly or Coogee. Be ready for two things. February is the city’s most humid month, and it’s also one of the wettest, with around 130 mm of rain that usually arrives as heavy bursts rather than all-day grey.

The bonus is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The festival usually starts in mid-February and builds to the parade along Oxford Street, which is usually held on the first Saturday in March. Arrive in the last week of February and you get both the beaches and the festival atmosphere.

Carnival Month: 3 Parties Worth Building a February Trip Around

Venice, Rio and New Orleans all celebrate carnival before Lent, so their big days move with Easter. That’s the single most important fact for planning: carnival usually falls in February, but in some years the final days slide into early March. Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans, for example, can land on any Tuesday from 3 February to 9 March.

❗ Important: Never book carnival flights from memory or from an old article. Look up the official dates for the year you travel first, then book. All three festivals end on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), so once you know that date you know the whole calendar.

5. Venice: Masks, Mist and Cold Stone

The Carnival of Venice usually runs for about two and a half weeks and ends on Shrove Tuesday. Expect masked figures in the squares, costume balls, and a contest for the most beautiful mask. Crowds peak on the final weekends, especially around St Mark’s Square.

Here’s what the photos don’t show: February in Venice averages about 9°C (49°F) by day and close to freezing at night, and the city’s flood tides, the acqua alta, are a risk from autumn into early spring. Pack proper waterproof shoes, not the fashionable ones. Weekdays early in carnival are far calmer than the closing weekend, and the masks are just as good. If you want to pair Venice with another stop, our list of the best places in Europe in February has easy add-ons.

6. Rio de Janeiro: The Biggest Party, the Hottest City

Rio’s carnival runs from the Friday before Ash Wednesday to midday on Ash Wednesday itself. The headline event is the samba school parade at the Sambadrome, where parades usually start around 8 or 9 pm and run until about 5 am. The city’s metro runs around the clock on the main parade nights, which tells you how late everyone stays out.

The street parties, called blocos, are where most visitors have the best time, and they’re free. You’ll find them in nearly every neighbourhood, from Copacabana and Ipanema to downtown. Prepare for heat: February highs average about 32°C (90°F), nights stay around 24°C (76°F), and summer storms can be heavy. Light clothes, a refillable water bottle, and a phone you don’t mind losing are the practical kit.

7. New Orleans: Weeks of Parades, Not Just One Day

Carnival season in New Orleans starts on 6 January, and parades roll on most days as Mardi Gras approaches. The largest, most elaborate parades happen in the final five days. That’s the window to target if you want the full spectacle; come a week earlier for smaller, family-friendlier parades and easier hotel availability.

Winters are mild, so a light jacket usually does it. And don’t treat the city as only a parade route: king cake season, gumbo and beignets are half the reason to go. Our guide to February travel for food lovers has more on eating your way through the month.

Carnival follows Easter, not the calendar. Find Shrove Tuesday first and every other date falls into place.

Cold, Clear and Quiet: 3 Winter Destinations That Peak in February

Some places are simply better in the cold. These three use February’s snow, darkness and low crowds to their advantage, and each one gives you something you can’t get in any other month.

8. Kyoto: Plum Blossoms Before the Cherry Crowds

Most travellers save Kyoto for cherry blossom season, which is exactly why February is so good. The temples are calmer, and the plum trees, which flower in February and March across much of Japan, put on an earlier, quieter show. Kitano Tenmangu shrine is known for its plum garden, and its Baikasai plum festival, with an open-air tea ceremony, is usually held on 25 February.

It’s cold. Kyoto averages about 10°C (50°F) by day and 2°C (35°F) at night, with occasional snow, and when it does snow, the Golden Pavilion and the hillside temples look their best. Get to the big sights at opening time, wear shoes you can slip off easily (you’ll remove them at many temples), and warm up afterwards with a bowl of tofu hot pot.

9. Quebec City: Ten Days of Snow, Parades and Bonhomme

The Carnaval de Québec usually runs for about ten days in early to mid-February, with night parades, music nights and the ice canoe race on the frozen St Lawrence. Bonhomme, the snowman mascot, is everywhere. Set against the stone walls of the old town, it feels more like a European winter fair than a typical North American event.

It is also seriously cold: February averages about -5°C (23°F) by day and -16°C (4°F) at night, with roughly 64 cm of snow in the month. Dress in layers, a windproof shell and insulated boots, and plan indoor breaks every couple of hours. If snow is the main draw, our list of the best ski resorts to visit in February pairs well with a few days here.

10. Finnish Lapland: Long Nights for the Northern Lights

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, February and March are among the best months for aurora watching in Finland. In northern Lapland, around three nights in four have northern lights when the sky is clear, and the best time to look is roughly 9 pm to 1 am. February also brings more daylight than December and January, so you get usable days for husky rides and snowshoeing.

Rovaniemi averages about -7°C (19°F) by day and -13°C (8°F) at night, and inland spots can be colder. Book at least three nights, because cloud is your real enemy, not the sun. Prefer fjords and coastal light? Compare with our guide to the northern lights in Norway in February.

💡 Tip: Stay outside town for aurora nights. Street lights wash out faint displays, and a lodge or cabin 20–30 minutes from the centre makes a visible difference on a clear night.

How to Pick Your February Trip in 5 Steps (Without Overthinking It)

Choosing between ten good options is harder than choosing between two. This short process cuts the list down to one destination in about ten minutes, using only facts you already have.

1

Pick your trip type

Sun, festival or snow. Write it down. If you can’t choose, the festival options with warm weather (Rio, Sydney) cover two at once.

2

Lock your dates against the calendar

For carnival trips, find Shrove Tuesday for your year. For the Maldives or Cape Town, any February week works; for Lapland, avoid dates around the full moon if you can, as a bright moon dims fainter displays.

3

Check the flight time honestly

A week in the Maldives or Sydney from Europe or North America loses close to two days to travel. Under seven nights, choose something closer.

4

Match it to your group

Rio and the final Mardi Gras weekend suit adults who like crowds. With children, Maui, Lapland or Quebec City in the daytime work far better.

5

Book the bottleneck first

Every trip has one thing that sells out: carnival hotels, Maldives resorts, Lapland cabins. Book that before flights.

The February Packing Split: Why One Bag Can’t Cover Both Hemispheres

The gap between the warmest and coldest places on this list is more than 40 degrees Celsius, so a single “February packing list” is useless. Pack for the trip type instead. These three short lists cover the essentials that people most often forget.

Trip typePackLeave at home
Sun (Maui, Cape Town, Maldives, Sydney)Reef-safe sunscreen, a light windproof layer for Cape Town, a rain shell for Sydney and Maui, water shoesHeavy jeans, more than one warm jumper
Festival (Venice, Rio, New Orleans)Waterproof shoes for Venice, a small cross-body bag, light breathable clothes for Rio, a mask or costume pieceValuables you can’t afford to lose in crowds
Snow (Kyoto, Quebec City, Lapland)Thermal base layers, insulated waterproof boots, mittens over gloves, a hat that covers your ears, spare phone batteryCotton layers that stay wet and cold
✨ Quick win: Phone batteries drain fast in deep cold. Keep yours in an inside pocket close to your body in Quebec and Lapland, and carry a small power bank. For a full list built around your destination and season, try the free Packing by Season Generator.

5 Common Mistakes That Spoil the Best Travel Destinations in February

Every one of these places can disappoint if you get one detail wrong. These are the mistakes that catch even experienced travellers.

Assuming carnival is always mid-February

Because the dates follow Easter, carnival can end as early as the first week of February or as late as early March. People book a “mid-February carnival week” and arrive after the parades are over. Always check the year’s Shrove Tuesday before you book anything.

Booking only one or two aurora nights

Auroras are frequent in northern Lapland, but clouds aren’t predictable a week ahead. With two nights, one cloudy evening halves your chances. Three nights is the minimum we’d recommend; four or five is better if the budget allows.

Treating Cape Town like a calm beach city

The sunshine is reliable; the stillness isn’t. The south-easter can blow for days. Plan sheltered activities, like the winelands or the city’s museums, as backups, and do the mountain on the first calm morning instead of saving it for the last day.

Waiting for a Maldives deal in the driest month

February is high season, not shoulder season. Last-minute bargains are rare when resorts are near capacity. If price matters more than perfect weather, look at the shoulder months instead; the free Shoulder Season Detector shows when the trade-off is worth it.

Packing city shoes for Venice

February falls inside the acqua alta season, and the stone streets are cold and slick. Waterproof, grippy footwear matters more than how your costume photos look. You can buy disposable shoe covers locally, but proper boots are the real answer.

⚠️ Warning: Big festivals mean big crowds and pickpockets. In Rio, Venice and New Orleans, carry only what you need for the day, keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag, and agree on a meeting point with your group in case you get separated.

February Travel Questions People Ask Most

Where is warm to travel in February?

The reliable warm options are in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. The Maldives averages around 31°C with its driest weather of the year, Rio de Janeiro around 32°C, while Maui, Cape Town and Sydney all sit near 27–28°C. Cape Town is the driest of the three, Sydney the most humid, and Maui adds peak whale season.

Is carnival always in February?

No. Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, and that date depends on Easter. It usually falls in February, but some years it moves into early March. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras Day can be any Tuesday from 3 February to 9 March, so always confirm the dates for your year before booking.

Is February a good month to see the northern lights?

Yes, it’s one of the best. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names February and March among the top months, with dark nights and more daylight than midwinter for daytime activities. In northern Lapland, roughly three clear nights in four show auroras. Plan at least three nights and watch between about 9 pm and 1 am.

Is February a good time to visit the Maldives?

It’s arguably the best time for weather. February is usually the driest month in Malé, with only a few rainy days, lots of sunshine and calm seas for snorkelling. The downside is demand: resorts are often close to full from February to April. If you want February, book early rather than waiting for a deal.

Can you see whales in Hawaii in February?

Yes, February is one of the best months. Humpback whales typically spend November to April in Hawaiian waters, and the season usually peaks between January and March. Maui is the classic base. You can often spot them from shore, but a boat tour gets you closer, while still keeping the required 100-yard distance.

Is Kyoto worth visiting in February?

Yes, if you can handle the cold. Daytime highs average around 10°C and nights near freezing, but temples are much quieter than in spring. Plum blossoms start appearing, Kitano Tenmangu’s plum festival is usually held on 25 February, and an occasional snowfall makes the temple gardens look extraordinary. Pack warm layers and easy slip-off shoes.

The best travel destinations in February all reward one habit: matching the place to what the month does best there, whether that’s dry sun, a carnival calendar or long aurora nights. Pick your trip type, confirm the dates, book the thing that sells out first, and February turns from a dead month into one of the strongest of the year.
