Most lists of the top 10 travel destinations tell you where to go. Few tell you when, and timing is what decides whether a trip is a success. The same island can be calm and golden one month and full, hot and expensive the next.

The Top 10 Travel Destinations and When to Go
1. Greece
Ancient sites, whitewashed islands and some of the clearest sea in Europe. Greece is a classic for good reason, but its high summer is hard work.
Choosing a month is the decision that shapes the whole trip. The Smart Timing Bundle walks you through it: rule out the wrong months, find the shoulder window, book in the right order and pack for the weather you will actually get.
See the Smart Timing Bundle β- Best month: September, ideally the second half: Augustβs warm sea with Mayβs crowds and calmer winds.
- Smart alternative: May, when the islands open, ferries run and crowds are still away.
- Hardest month: August, especially around 15 August, the busiest week of the year.
When to Go: Greece covers the islands, Athens and the mainland month by month.
2. Japan
Temples, mountains, food and a rail network that makes everything easy. Japanβs seasons are dramatic, and the gap between the best and worst months is wide.

- Best month: November, with autumn colour, dry air and a fraction of springβs crowds.
- Smart alternative: late March to early April for the cherry blossom, if you book early and accept crowds.
- Hardest month: August, with heat, humidity, typhoon risk and holiday crowds. Avoid Golden Week, around late April to early May, too.
3. Italy
Art cities, coastlines, lakes and mountains in one country. Italy works in almost any season, but each region has its moment.
- Best month: September: warm sea, harvest season and thinning crowds.
- Smart alternative: mid-April to May for Rome, Florence and Venice before the heat.
- Hardest month: August, when cities are hot and the coast is full of Italian holidaymakers.
4. Portugal
Lisbonβs hills, Portoβs riverfront, the Algarveβs cliffs and two Atlantic archipelagos. Portugal is compact, varied and easy to combine.
- Best month: May, warm, sunny and green, with summer crowds still weeks away.
- Smart alternative: October, the best touring month, with golden vineyards in the Douro.
- Hardest month: August, Portugalβs own holiday month, with a full coast and a hot interior.
5. Iceland
Waterfalls, glaciers, black beaches and the northern lights. Icelandβs season shapes everything: daylight, road access and prices.
- Best month: September, with autumn colour, fewer people, open roads and the return of the aurora.
- Smart alternative: May, with long daylight at spring prices and waterfalls in full flow.
- Hardest month: November for road trips, with short days and storms.
6. Morocco
Medinas, mountains, desert and Atlantic coast. Moroccoβs heat inland is the key timing factor.
- Best months: March and October: warm cities, easy desert, open mountain passes.
- Smart alternative: December and January for value, with cold desert nights.
- Hardest month: July inland, when the heat in the cities and desert is severe. Keep summer trips on the coast and in the mountains.
When to Go: Morocco breaks every region down by month, including the desert and the Atlas.

7. Peru
Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca and the Amazon. Peruβs Andean dry season defines the best time to go.
- Best month: May, with dry skies, green valleys and the last weeks before the mid-year rush.
- Smart alternative: September for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, with dry weather and fading crowds.
- Hardest month: February, peak rain in the Andes, when the Inca Trail usually closes for maintenance.
8. Costa Rica
Rainforest, volcanoes, cloud forest and two coasts. Costa Ricaβs dry and green seasons differ between the Pacific and Caribbean sides.
- Best month: February, the most reliable month: dry and past the holiday rush.
- Smart alternative: August for wildlife, with whales on the Pacific and turtles on the Caribbean.
- Hardest month: October, usually the wettest month on the Pacific side. The Caribbean coast often stays calmer.
When to Go: Costa Rica explains both coasts month by month.
9. Tanzania and Zanzibar
The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro and the beaches of Zanzibar. Tanzania combines the worldβs great wildlife spectacle with an Indian Ocean island.

What This List Tells You About Timing
Look down the table and a pattern appears. September and May are among the best months for many destinations. They sit between the school holidays and the off-season, combining good weather with lower demand.
August is the hardest month for four of these ten. It is the European holiday month, and in many places it is also the hottest, most expensive and most crowded time of year.
The lesson works almost anywhere: if you can travel in the shoulder months, you usually get more for your money and your time.
How to Use This List
- Start with your dates. If you can travel only in a specific month, look for destinations where that month is a best month or a smart alternative.
- Or start with the destination. If your heart is set on a place, plan your dates around its best window.
- Check the regions. Big countries such as Japan, Italy or Costa Rica have very different climates by region. The best month for one area may be a poor month for another.
- Check holidays and events. National holidays and festivals can fill a destination at short notice.
Plan Your Next Trip
Each destination on this list has its own When to Go guide, about 100 pages each, covering every month, every region, the events and the trade-offs. For help choosing the month for any trip, the Smart Timing Bundle brings our trip timing tools together in one set.
Seasons are typical patterns, not forecasts, and event dates move. Check official sources before you book.
