July is the year’s great beach month in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is not the best month for every beach. The best beach destinations in July are the ones where warm water, dry weather and manageable crowds overlap, and where the monsoon, the meltemi or hurricane season are not working against you.

Below are twelve beach regions that usually deliver in July, from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Each one comes with the honest catch, followed by a short list of beaches better saved for another month.

What to look for in a July beach
- Sea temperature: 22 °C and above feels comfortable for most swimmers; the Atlantic often stays below that.
- Wind: strong summer winds can make some coasts wonderful for kitesurfing and miserable for families.
- Rain pattern: a dry season, or tropical showers that pass in an hour.
- Storm risk: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the main risk later than July.
- Crowds: July is school holidays in much of the world; the busiest beaches need early bookings.

Europe
1. The Ionian islands, Greece
Corfu, Paxos, Kefalonia and Lefkada sit on Greece’s western side, sheltered from the strong meltemi wind that blows across the Aegean in July and August. The sea is warm, the coves are green-backed and ferries are less exposed to wind disruption.

Choosing a month is the decision that shapes the whole trip. The Smart Timing Bundle walks you through it: rule out the wrong months, find the shoulder window, book in the right order and pack for the weather you will actually get.
See the Smart Timing Bundle →July is still high season, so book rooms and cars early. Smaller islands such as Paxos and Ithaca feel calmer than Corfu’s busiest resorts.
2. Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia’s water is among the clearest in the Mediterranean, and July brings sea temperatures around 24–25 °C. The Gulf of Orosei, the south coast near Chia and the Costa Smeralda each have a different character, from wild coves to long white sands.
Italian holidays push demand higher towards August, so July is the slightly calmer of the two peak months. Some protected beaches limit daily numbers or require booking; check before you go.
3. The Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve’s cliffs, caves and golden sand are at their sunniest in July. The water is Atlantic, usually around 20–22 °C, so it refreshes rather than warms. The eastern Algarve, towards Tavira, is usually a little warmer and calmer.

It is peak season, with the busiest weeks from mid-July. Book early, and visit the famous rock formations and sea caves early in the morning.
4. The north coast of Spain
The beaches of Cantabria, Asturias and the Basque Country are long, sandy and backed by green hills. Highs are usually in the low to mid-20s °C, making this the best choice in Spain for anyone who dislikes heat.
The sea is cooler than the Mediterranean, and cloudy days happen. In return you get space, surf schools, excellent food and towns that feel local even in summer.
5. Brittany, France
Brittany’s coast mixes pink granite rocks, wide tidal beaches and island day trips. The Atlantic stays cool, but sunny July days are long and mild. It is a classic for families and sailors, less so for people who want warm water.
Asia and the Indian Ocean
6. Bali, Indonesia
July is the peak of Bali’s dry season, with sea temperatures around 27 °C and steady sunshine. The Bukit Peninsula has cliff-backed beaches and world-class surf; Sanur and Nusa Dua have calm, reef-protected water.
It is also one of the busiest periods of the year, with traffic to match. Stay close to the beaches you want, and consider the Nusa islands for a slower pace.
7. Ko Samui and Ko Tao, Thailand
While Thailand’s Andaman coast takes the full southwest monsoon, the Gulf islands are usually among the best places in the country in July. Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao often have long dry spells and calm water for snorkelling and diving.
Book ferries and rooms ahead, as the Gulf is where everyone in Thailand heads in July. Short showers still happen.
8. Zanzibar, Tanzania
July is in Zanzibar’s main dry season, with lower humidity, warm sea around 25 °C and steady trade winds. The east coast beaches at Paje and Jambiani are popular for kitesurfing; the north at Nungwi and Kendwa has less tidal range for swimming.

Combine it with a northern Tanzania safari, which is in its best season at the same time.
The Americas and the Pacific
9. Maui, Hawaii
July in Hawaii means reliable sun, calm water on many south and west shores and good snorkelling at spots such as Molokini. Water is warm all year. The trade-off is peak demand: book flights, rooms and rental cars well in advance.
10. Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast is usually the driest part of the country, and July often brings the little summer (veranillo), a drier break in the rainy season. Beaches at Tamarindo, Playa Conchal and the Papagayo Peninsula are warm, green and quieter than in the dry season.
11. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao
The ABC islands sit at the southern edge of the Caribbean, outside the main hurricane belt. July is dry and breezy, with excellent diving on Bonaire and Curaçao and long white beaches on Aruba. Hurricane season still applies to the wider region, so travel insurance is sensible.
12. Isla Mujeres and Holbox, Mexico
The Mexican Caribbean is hot in July, with sea temperatures around 29 °C. The draw is whale-shark season, which usually runs from about June to September off Isla Mujeres and Holbox. Sargassum seaweed can affect Caribbean beaches in summer; check recent reports before you book.

Beaches to save for another month
- Phuket, Krabi and Ko Lanta: the Andaman coast often has rough seas and red-flag days in July.
- Goa and Kerala: the Indian monsoon is in full swing.
- Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts: the southwest monsoon brings rough water; the east coast is the better choice.
- The Aegean islands on windy weeks: the meltemi can cancel ferries and make north-facing beaches rough. Choose south-facing beaches on Mykonos, Naxos or Paros.
- Egypt’s Red Sea and the Gulf: swimmable, but daytime heat makes beach days hard work.
Frequently asked questions

The Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Red Sea and South-East Asia are warmest, often 27–30 °C. In the Mediterranean, the eastern and southern seas are warmer than the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain and France.
