Planning romantic getaways for Valentine’s Day sounds simple until you look at the calendar. The 14th lands in the middle of the northern winter, in the wet season of half the tropics, and close to some of the busiest holiday weekends of the year. Pick the wrong place and you get grey skies and full restaurants; pick well and you get warm evenings and a table by the water. This guide gives you eight getaways beyond Europe that genuinely work in mid-February, the weather numbers behind each one, and the order to book things in.

The best romantic getaways for Valentine’s Day are places in their dry or mild season in mid-February: Mexico’s Riviera Maya (about 29 °C highs, dry season), the Maldives (31 °C, one of the drier months), Costa Rica’s Guanacaste coast (almost no rain), Cape Town (27 °C, long sunny days), Maui (whale season), Dubai and Marrakech (warm days, cool nights) and Kyoto for plum blossoms. Book flights and rooms early, because the 14th often sits near Presidents’ Day, Lunar New Year or Carnival.
✅ Key takeaways
- ✓Mid-February is dry season on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and Costa Rica’s Pacific side, and one of the driest stretches of the year in the Maldives.
- ✓Cape Town is at its summer best: long-term averages give about 27 °C highs and fewer than two rainy days in February.
- ✓Dubai and Marrakech suit couples who want warm days rather than beach heat; pack a layer for evenings that drop to around 16 °C and 8 °C.
- ✓Check what else falls in your week: Presidents’ Day is always between 15 and 21 February, Lunar New Year can fall as late as 20 February, and Carnival often lands in February.
- ✓Bali is in its wet season in February, so choose it for a villa and spa trip, not for beach days.
- ✓Book the dinner on the 14th itself as early as the restaurant allows; it’s the one booking you can’t fix on arrival.
Why the Week of 14 February Is Harder to Book Than It Looks
Valentine’s Day rarely sits alone on the calendar. It often shares its week with other big travel moments, and that is what makes flights and rooms disappear, not the romance itself. Before you fall for a destination, check what else is happening there and back home that week.

| What else falls near the 14th | When it usually lands | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday), USA | Third Monday of February, always between 15 and 21 February | A long weekend for many American travellers: Mexico, Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Caribbean get busier |
| Lunar New Year | A new moon between 21 January and 20 February | Big travel period across East and Southeast Asia; trains and flights in Japan’s neighbours and many Asian hubs fill up |
| Carnival (Rio and much of Latin America and the Caribbean) | The days before Ash Wednesday, usually in February, sometimes early March | Higher prices and full hotels in Carnival cities; great if you want the party, tough if you want quiet |
| Valentine’s Day dinner itself | 14 February, every year | Set menus, fixed sittings and early sell-outs at the best-known restaurants |
Lunar New Year moves every year, so look up the exact date for the year you’re travelling before you book anything in Asia. The same goes for Carnival: it follows Easter, so in some years it lands right on top of Valentine’s Day and in others it drifts into early March. Romantic Getaways for Valentine’s Day at a Glance: Mid-February Weather
These are long-term February averages from national weather services, not forecasts. They tell you what a typical Valentine’s week feels like, which is what matters when you’re choosing between a beach and a city.
| Getaway | Avg high / low | Typical February rain | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riviera Maya (Cancún) | 29 °C / 20 °C | ≈43 mm, about 4 rainy days | Beach, cenotes, ruins by the sea |
| Maldives (Malé) | 31 °C / 26 °C | ≈38 mm, about 3 rainy days | Total-escape island stay |
| Guanacaste, Costa Rica (Liberia) | 34 °C / 21 °C | Almost none | Sunset beaches plus wildlife |
| Maui, Hawaii (Kahului) | 28 °C / 18 °C | ≈51 mm | Whale watching, road trips |
| Cape Town, South Africa | 27 °C / 17 °C | ≈10 mm, under 2 rainy days | City, coast and winelands |

| Marrakech, Morocco | 21 °C / 8 °C | ≈26 mm, about 4 rainy days | Riads, gardens, mountain views |
| Kyoto, Japan | 10 °C / 2 °C | ≈65 mm | Temples, plum blossoms, ryokan |
Beach Escapes With Reliable Sun: Riviera Maya, the Maldives and Guanacaste
If your idea of Valentine’s Day is warm sand at sunset, these three are the safest bets in February because all of them are in their dry season. They differ in how much you want to do between swims.
Riviera Maya, Mexico: sea, cenotes and a clifftop ruin

Mexico’s Caribbean coast is in its dry season from November to April, and February in Cancún averages about 29 °C by day and 20 °C at night, with only around four rainy days. Hurricane season (June to November) is far away. For couples, the appeal is variety: a morning swim in a jungle cenote, an afternoon at the clifftop ruins of Tulum, dinner on the beach.

Base yourself in a quieter stretch rather than the hotel strip if the trip is about the two of you. Tulum and the smaller towns along the coast feel calmer than Cancún’s hotel zone, and you can still reach cenotes and ruins on easy day trips. Expect the coast to be busy, though: February is high season here, and Presidents’ Day weekend brings extra visitors from the US.
When to Go: Mexico
Weighing February against March or a quieter month? This guide walks through Mexico month by month: weather on each coast, crowds, the seasons for whales and monarchs, and what each region is best for, so your dates fit the trip you have in mind.

The Maldives: the full escape
The Maldives is the classic Valentine’s island stay, and February is a sensible month for it. Malé’s long-term February averages are 31 °C highs, 26 °C lows, about 38 mm of rain over roughly three rainy days and more than 260 hours of sunshine; February and March are the country’s driest stretch. Water this warm means snorkelling straight off the beach on many islands.
The trade-off is that this is one resort, one island, for the whole stay. That’s perfect if you want to switch off, less so if you get restless. Choose your island for its house reef and how you get there (boat or seaplane transfer), and treat everything else as a bonus.
Guanacaste, Costa Rica: sunsets and howler monkeys
Costa Rica’s Pacific northwest is about as dry as the tropics get in February. Liberia, the gateway town for Guanacaste, averages 34 °C by day and 21 °C at night with almost no rain, inside a dry season that runs from November to April. Expect golden-brown hills, west-facing beaches built for sunset and dry forest where you’ll often hear howler monkeys before you see them.

Pair a few beach days with a night or two inland if you want greener scenery. The heat is real at midday, so plan walks and wildlife tours for early morning and keep the afternoon for shade and the pool. For more ideas that suit February’s tropical side, our guide to exotic places to visit in February compares long-haul options in Asia, Africa and the Pacific.
Warm Cities With a View: Cape Town, Dubai and Marrakech
Not every couple wants a week on a sun lounger. These three give you restaurants, views and a city to explore, with weather that’s comfortable rather than extreme.
Cape Town and the Winelands: summer at its most settled
February is high summer in Cape Town and one of the most settled months of the year. The long-term averages show 27 °C highs, 17 °C lows, around 10 mm of rain spread over fewer than two days, and about 300 hours of sunshine in the month. That’s a lot of golden evenings for a sundowner on a beach or a mountain.

Build the trip in two halves: three or four nights in the city for the coast, the Cape Peninsula drive and a sunrise or sunset walk, then two or three nights in the winelands inland, where the pace slows down. Wind is the one thing to plan for. The strong, dry south-easterly known as the Cape Doctor blows from spring to late summer, so keep a flexible day for the cableway or a boat trip.
Dubai: warm days, desert evenings
February is one of Dubai’s most comfortable months. Long-term averages at the airport are about 26 °C by day and 16 °C at night, with very little rain, and the sea sits at around 21 °C: cool for some, perfectly swimmable for others. It’s the right month for long beach walks, a dinner with a skyline view and an evening in the desert, without the summer heat that makes outdoor plans hard.

Bring a light jacket for the desert after dark, where it feels noticeably cooler than the city. If you want to add a second country, our guide to the Middle East in February covers the region’s other mild-weather options.
Marrakech: riads, gardens and snow on the Atlas
Marrakech in February is mild rather than hot: about 21 °C by day, but nights drop to around 8 °C. That contrast is part of the charm. Days are for gardens, souks and rooftop lunches with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon; evenings are for a riad courtyard, ideally one with a fireplace. With more than 200 hours of sunshine on average, most days are bright.
Choose a riad with heating and say so when you book; traditional houses built around open courtyards can feel chilly at night. A day trip into the Atlas foothills adds mountain air and a long lunch with a view.
Two Different Kinds of Romance: Maui’s Whales and Kyoto’s Plum Blossoms
These two are for couples who want the trip to be about one shared experience: watching humpbacks from a cliff, or walking a quiet shrine garden in the first blossoms of the year.
Maui, Hawaii: whale season and warm sea
Humpback whales come to Hawaiian waters every winter to mate, give birth and raise their calves, and according to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary visitors can see them from shore and at sea from November through April. February sits in the middle of that window. Kahului’s long-term February averages are about 28 °C by day and 18 °C at night, with around 51 mm of rain.
Watch from a coastal lookout with binoculars at sunset, or book a whale-watching cruise with an operator that follows the rules: boats and swimmers must keep at least 100 yards (about 90 m) from humpbacks. Winter surf can be powerful, so swim where lifeguards are posted and choose sheltered beaches.
Kyoto, Japan: cold air, warm inns and the first blossoms
Kyoto is the cold-weather pick on this list, and that’s exactly why it works for some couples. February averages are about 10 °C by day and 2 °C at night. The plum trees bloom before the famous cherry blossoms, and Kitano Tenmangū shrine, filled with red and white plum trees, holds its Plum Blossom Festival (Baikasai) on 25 February. A night in a ryokan with a private bath turns a chilly day into the best part of the trip.
Avoid the Lunar New Year weeks if your trip also includes other East Asian cities, and book ryokan early: the small, well-loved inns have very few rooms.
How to Choose: Match the Getaway to the Couple
The right Valentine’s getaway depends less on how romantic a place looks in photos and more on what you two actually enjoy doing on a free day. Use this as a quick filter.
| If you two want… | Go to | Skip it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Do-nothing beach time and great snorkelling | Maldives | You get bored after two days in one place |
| Beach plus culture plus easy day trips | Riviera Maya | You want quiet beaches all to yourselves |
| Sunsets, heat and wildlife | Guanacaste | You don’t enjoy 30 °C-plus afternoons |
| A city, a mountain and a wine farm in one trip | Cape Town | Wind spoils your mood |
| A short, warm city break with luxury options | Dubai | You want an old-town atmosphere |
| Courtyards, gardens and mild sun | Marrakech | You hate cold evenings |
| Whales, road trips and warm sea | Maui | Long flights are a deal-breaker |
| Temples, blossoms and hot baths | Kyoto | You need warmth to relax |
🏝️ Short on time?
Stay closer to home. A three- or four-night trip with a long flight each way rarely feels romantic. Dubai and Marrakech work as short breaks from Europe; Mexico from North America.
🧊 Don’t mind the cold?
Snowy Valentine’s trips have their own pull. Our guide to winter wonderlands in North America covers cabins, ski towns and frozen lakes.

A Calm Booking Order for Your Valentine’s Trip
Book the scarce things first and the flexible things last. Most stress around Valentine’s trips comes from doing it the other way round: flights first, then discovering the one restaurant or inn you wanted is full.

Fix your dates against the calendar
Check that week for Presidents’ Day, Lunar New Year, Carnival and school holidays where you live. Shift by a few days if it saves you the busiest weekend.
Book the room with the view
Small hotels, overwater villas, ryokan and riads have few rooms. Lock in the one you want, on a flexible rate if possible.
Book flights next
Once the room is confirmed, book flights. Our free When to Book Calculator suggests a booking window by route type and season.
Reserve the dinner on the 14th
Ask the hotel or restaurant when Valentine’s bookings open and set a reminder. Many places run a set menu that night.
Book one shared experience
A whale cruise, a cooking class, a sunset sail: one booked highlight is enough. Leave the other days loose.
Pack for the evenings
Warm places still cool down after sunset in February (Marrakech drops to about 8 °C). A light layer saves the night out.
5 Valentine’s Getaway Mistakes That Quietly Ruin the Trip
1. Booking Bali for beach days in February
Bali is beautiful year-round, but February is deep in its wet season. Denpasar’s long-term February average is about 300 mm of rain over 16 or 17 days. It still works for a villa-and-spa trip in the hills; it’s the wrong pick if the plan is lazy beach afternoons.
2. Forgetting the other holiday in the same week
A Valentine’s weekend that coincides with Presidents’ Day or Carnival means fuller flights and higher room rates. Check the calendar before you fall in love with a date.
3. Planning a big surprise abroad without checking the basics
Surprise trips are lovely until someone’s passport is about to expire. Many countries require several months of validity left on a passport, so check both passports before you buy anything.
4. Over-scheduling every day
One booked highlight and one great dinner are enough. A trip packed with tours leaves no room for the long lunch or the extra hour at sunset that couples remember most.
5. Dressing for the daytime high
Desert and mountain-edge cities swing hard between day and night. In Marrakech the difference is about 13 °C. Pack a layer you’d be happy to wear to dinner.
